Crimtrac moves to green data centre
Source: Government Technology Review - June/July - Issue 1
The Federal Government's desire for green, consolidated data centres has started to bear fruit as Crimtrac, an agency chaged with developing technology to assist police with information needed to solve crimes, moved one of its two hubs into a facility operated by Canberra Data Centre.
Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor opened the centre in late May, and said it consumes half the power of the agency's previous facility, will achieve significant water savings and requires half the floorspace of its predecessor. Scalability is another feature, as the centre has been designed to meet law enforcement bodies' future requirements.
The new facility will serve as one of Crimtrac's two data hubs, each of which will be ised to store DNA, fingerprint records and the Australian National Child Offender Register. Data will be replicated between the two hubs.
As one would expect, given the sensitivity of the material on-site, security is at a premium. The data centre in which Crimtrac's equipment will be housed has achieved T4 security certification and will also be subject to random checks by ASIO.
